I was thinking that we could create a forum to discuss recent work that we might be inclined to post on social media but would be much more fruitful and rewarding to discuss amongst our fellow creatives. I'm posting these as an example. I currently shot them in my home makeshift studio. The woman is a saxophonist. I was shooting some PR for her and I wanted something stark of her with her short (can't see in these shots) bright blonde hair and the black background. I gave her a sheer black scarf I barely wear to play with and she wrapped it around her hair and face. I did not think of the possible political statement it might evoke from many of my friends and colleagues who are very passionate about what is happening in the Middle East, some pro and others con, on both sides. The photos below are 3, all very different, in sequence. My idea is most reflected in the first one, although not exactly as is. My concern is posting these on FB because opinions and tensions are so inflamed right now. So I'm sharing them here so that we can look at them solely through an artisitc lens!
However, the primary intention of this post is to discuss creating a category on recent work.
I also agree with a forum to discuss our newer work. My view of the 'candid's' of your client's poses when given the scarf are much different than what you have talked about. In the B/W - I see a bit of concealment with a subtle invitation for a more personal connection. The second - I see 'It's a scarf'. The third.. Again, a reach out for a connection. I didn't see any current event connections to the series. Great images! i
I fully support your idea of starting a forum to discuss recently work. I've pretty much stopped sharing my works on social media because I didn't make sales that way, and I think a good website better promotes what we can offer.
Yes, political correctness is a big challenge. One word I saw Farber use is "subtle". A lot of art gains quality by not being "in your face" but by having a subtle quality. I noticed your photos here are very sharp, crystal clear. I just watched the movie about May Pangs relationship with John Lennon. It presented a lot of very grainy, very soft, very warm portrait photos of them. Absolutely stunning. I love your scarf idea. A scarf can be worn so many ways; headscarfs i.e. muslims and Greek Orthodox wears these in a different way. Bandanas, tiny scarfs around your neck Kennedy style or artists loose big cotton scarfs. I think you got a great idea. Myself I don't worry about others opinions when I photograph, but I certainly pick selectively who I show them to lol Yes, good idea about this forum. Currently, I'm planning a photoshoot of a male older golfer. I prep myself by Googling golf photos and looking in golf coffee table books. Then I just play along with whatever unfolds during the shoot. All I directed about what to wear is id like a dark and a light outfit..
Just for context, this is the PR kind of shot she needed but I shot her in several different settings.
