Shot recently at my yearly gig for the Jazz Foundation of America at their fundraiser in the Apollo Theater, entitled, "A Great Night in Harlem". This is 99 year old Marshall Allen who took over leading the Sun Ra Arkestra after Sun Ra's death in 1993. I photographed Sun Ra many times before that and have many iconic photos of him. Whenever the Arkestra played I and most photographers were mostly drawn to him as he was the consummate character. But so was and still is Marshall Allen who is outliving most on this planet and not only out-living but out-playing! At 99 mind you, he is still hitting those notes hard! Here was a moment when he wasn't hitting but the light was hitting him on stage while in the background was a projected image of the legendary jazz drummer Max Roach who the Foundation was paying tribute to that night. I don't know if this fits this category neatly but I'd also like if there was a category for ambient or stage lighting to place this in.
