What exactly is the focus of this image? The ancient lighthouse, thousands of years old bas-relief carvings on this great rock, or the young girl going to school on her bicycle? While touring south India, this particular image stood out for me as a journey through history. The stone carvings are among the first great accomplishments of early Hindu culture, dating back thousands of years. Early Hindu culture was recorded in stone, carving not only bas-relief but also excavating cave temples and even building some of the largest and most complex structures in the world carved out of solid native rock. The lighthouse is representative of late Mideaval architecture while the young lady speaks to the future of India.
