Yes, it was. And the first time I photographed him, he did exactly what I was told he never did, that is, "Faced the Audience", which is why I titled another hand-painted piece, "Facing the Audience"!!!!
Wow, I love this one. In his autobiography he says that when he was young and early on in his career he was mean and openly disrespectful to the audience. But after he came out of his 4 year retirement he said he felt like being nicer and enjoyed interacting with crowds and facing the audience. He says he "lightened up", which I always thought was amusing.
LOL Jean Michel! I kinda don't think he ever truly lightened up to the point of being NICE, but yes, maybe "nicer"! Miles had to maintain his mystique and kinda cool! But that he didn't spend the whole concert with his back to the audience, was this neophytes very good fortune!!! And FYI, the first time this was published in it's black and white version, they ran it landscape mode and although I would have preferred it to have been used in portrait mode as I shot it, it worked!
Amazing ... I'd love to see the original photo as well. Miles is my all time fav ...
